A Wood Shutter Can Highlight Your Home

Traditional wooden shutters were the standard for as long as we’ve had shutters.  Now, though, vinyl and other types of shutters have taken the place of traditional wood house shutters.  The reason why wooden shutters are quickly becoming anachronistic is that they are very high-maintenance. Homeowners today are open to a way to eliminate maintenance around the house.  Wooden shutters require repainting or re-staining every so often, even if they are interior shutters. Let’s look at some alternatives.

Exterior house shutters are now exclusively used for decorative purposes and are never actually used, unlike in days gone by when shutters were first invented.  Shutters used to protect the house from rain and wind a long time ago, before double paned glass.  Nowadays, shutters are never actually used, but do add a finished look to any home.

As we slowly say goodbye to wooden shutters, we can explore the advantages of the following types of shutters:

Vinyl Shutters

Just like vinly exterior siding, vinyl house shutters require no regular repairs and will not rot or fall apart. The only drawback with vinyl shutters as opposed to wood is that they have a tendency to ding if anything is tossed at the shutters. In other words, they are less durable than wood for blocking rocks, hail or other debris.  Many people are willing to put up with this because vinyl shutters are attractive, are affordable and maintenance free.

Composite Shutters

These are cheaper shutters which use composite woods as opposed to solid woods.  The good thing about composite shutters is that they are unaffected by termites and rot and will last a lifetime.  They are normally sold pre-stained and do not require upkeep like solid wood, yet strongly resemble real wood.  Composite Shutters are a happy alternative for anyone thinking about maintenance free shutters.

Fiberglass shutters

Fiberglass is tough and hard-wearing.  Fiberglass is well suited to exterior house shutters and has been used in areas where the shutters need to be closed, such as parts of the world that are regularly hit by hurricanes.  Fiberglass shutters are slightly more expensive, but they are stout, maintenance free and built to last.  They are the perfect choice for anyone who lives in an area affected by hurricanes for the reason that they can take a battering.

Aluminum shutters

As with vinyl shutters, aluminum shutters are made like aluminum siding and are a popular choice for homeowners. While vinyl was very popular a generation ago, knocking aluminum out of the running, aluminum shutters showed up again and are presently very popular among people who want good looking and maintenance free shutters that are built to last.

Whether you are purchasing shutters for the exterior or interior of your house, you will find many different maintenance free shutters for your home.  The type of house shutters that you eventually buy will depend upon finances as well as the primary reason for the shutters.  Wood House Shutters are engineered for everything from blocking the wind and rain from a hurricane to improving your curb appeal.  Find the ones that are right for house.

Your Tiki Torches Buying Guide

The present world inherited tiki torches from the Central Polynesian culture. Tiki enthusiasts hold them in an awe and admiration.  Tiki torch is made of two parts, the first one is the outer shell or tiki itself while the second part is the torch or the flame.

These days you may find the outer shell to be made of metals like copper, brass and stainless steel, but originally it was made of bamboo only. Well, metal based tiki torches will certainly last longer. So you can decide is outdoor torch for you.

If you are looking at the décor and the almost near original thing then you will do better with the bamboo tiki torches. Apart from the charm associated with anything original, bamboo tiki torches are very affordable too.

The second part of a tiki torch is the flame. Any torch would need a fuel to keep it burning and an element that transfers fuel for its burning, and that of course is a wick.   It is a very common practice to use paraffin oil as a fuel for these torches. The characteristics of Paraffin oil that favor its use are: it is harmless and odorless too. You may as well use propane or natural gas for the purpose.

If you intend using a gas as a fuel, you have to have arrangements for a tank and a feeding pipe for the gas to reach the torch. The plus point of using gas as a medium for burning is that it offers a continuous flame of uniform, and even adjustable intensity but the flame doesn’t have the same visual charm of an oil based flame. They are often used as wedding tiki torches.

These torches can be conveniently be procured from a reputed hardware store or you may buy them online and as already mentioned keep in mind that tiki torches with bamboo shells are the most economical.

Get the Right Supplies for the Hottub

Just as with anything else, a hot tub needs its own supplies and accessories to help maintain it in smooth, top working order. Sometimes you’ll have to replace larger pieces, such as a hose or a jet. Other hot tub supplies you’ll want to have around on a more consistent basis, and those include cleansers, water sanitizing products to keep the water clean and spare filter gaskets.

A hot tub works much like a swimming pool, except it is heated and has massaging jets that pulsate through the water.  Hot tubs are often used in hospitals and nursing homes as a form of hydrotherapy, although in recent years, many people have begun to use hot tubs in their homes.  You can purchase inflatable hot tubs that can be inflated and used just about anywhere, or you can have a hot tub installed in or outside of your home.  You need to be aware of the care and maintenance of the hot tub just as you would if you had a pool.

Cleaning solutions

Periodically, the hot tub will have to be cleaned.  You cannot just use any type of cleaning solution for the hot tub, you need to use those that will not scratch the surface but will still sanitize the hot tub. One of the hot tub supplies that you will need to keep on hand is a cleaning solution for the hot tub so that you can keep it clean throughout the year.

Covers

Pools only need to be covered up at the end of the season, but hot tubs need to be covered up all the time when they aren’t being used. A hot tub cover can guard against dirt and bacteria getting into the water, along with other debris if it is outside in your yard. But a cover will also protect against children trying to enter without adult supervision. As a safety precaution and a way to keep the hot tub clean, hot tub covers are essential.

Water treatment

Just as pools need chemicals to keep the water safe and clean, so do hot tubs. You can use chlorine tablets which will kill bacteria and provide a sanitary environment. It’s also important to have water testing kits available. This will tell you the levels of any harmful bacteria as well as of the chemicals themselves, to ensure that the hot tub is safe to enter.

Replacement Parts

One part that you may need to replace will be the heater. Some people don’t realize that a replacement heater can be purchased easily as opposed to buying an entirely new hot tub. Besides the heater, other parts may need to be replaced from time to time, so you should gain an understanding of all of the moving and working pieces of your hot tub.

Knowing the hot tub supplies you will need to use and have handy ahead of time will make your life as a hot tub owner much easier. Hot tubs have many benefits and it takes only a minimal amount of care and maintenance to get the most out of your product.
