Information on How To Grow a Lawn
When you are preparing a new lawn you will have to choose between grass seed or laying turf. Using lawn grass seed is lots more economical than turf and has the benefit that you have a wider range of assorted kinds of lawn seed to select from. The optimum time to sow your lawn is in the fall or Spring as you need damp and relatively warm conditions. The summer is not the best time to begin a lawn as you will have to water often and the hot conditions are not best for the undeveloped seedlings to develop.
Different kinds of grasses grow at diverse rates so the length of time it takes for your new grass to be ready to walk on will depend on the species and the combination of lawn seed that you used. You will also need to look at the type of grass seed you need. There are specific shade grass seed for regions that don’t get the sun, sunny grass seed for spots that do! A very well-liked product is Scotts grass seed.
Prepare Your Area
Prior to seeding the lawn you must prepare the site suitably. The spot you have selected must be dug thoroughly and all stones removed and big clods of earth broken down. Rake over the section and compact lightly with your feet. The surface can then be scratched carefully to make furrows for the seeds.
Methods of Seeding the Lawn
There are two techniques used for seeding a lawn, by hand and with a seeding machine. To seed with a machine, weigh out the amount of seed mixture needed for your area then put half into the machine and apply by operating the machine up and down the area in strips. When you reach end of every strip, to prevent over-seeding, either use plastic to cover the ground or close off the holes in the machine. You may also use canes set into the earth or string to direct you. At this point place the rest of the grass seeds into the machine and, working at right angles to the first lines, complete seeding the lawn.
If you are hand seeding the lawn it’s a good idea to divide the area into pieces of a square yard by means of cord and sticks. Calculate the amount of lawn seed you require for each segment, weight this out and add to a small pot. Mark approximately how much this is so that you won’t have to weigh out every time. Uniformly seed the first segment, scattering the seeds in each directions so that they are spread consistently. Now restock the container to about the same height as previously and sow the next segment. Carry on until the whole area is done.
Once the entire area has been finished rake over lightly and irrigate thoroughly.During the next week to fortnight make certain you water regularly if there is no rain. The seedlings will begin to come through in the course of this time.
How to Mow Your Newly Seeded Lawn
Once the lawn seedlings are about 4 cm high you may cut the lawn for the first time preferably with a rotary lawn mower. Carefully gather grass clippings or use a rake and be cautious not to disturb the young seedlings.
