Placing Outdoor Security Lighting

One of the hottest trends in home security today is adding an outdoor security lighting to the area outside of the home.  These lights are used to illuminate specific areas around the home to deter criminals from entering and taking away the dark areas that criminals can use to sneak up to the home unseen.  The outdoor security lighting can be used in a number of different areas around the outside of the home and the placement will depend on the architecture of the home and the layout of the yard.

Many homeowners use outdoor flood lighting as an addition to other security systems, such as motion detectors and security cameras.  If the homeowner does not want the light fixture to be noticed during the day or when they have visitors to the home, the outdoor security light may be set away from eye level or placed under the roof of the home in such a way that the lighting is unnoticeable.  When turned on, many of these lights will illuminate a large area of the yard, reducing the dark places around doors and windows that may provide entry for a criminal during the night.

Using Outdoor Security Lighting

Many individuals choose to use a large outdoor security lighting that has the ability to light up large portions of the yard.  This means that the homeowner will not have to install outdoor security light fixtures in several different areas of the yard to receive the same amount of illumination.  The placement of the outdoor security light should be angled in a way so that the light falls over a wide area of the yard and is generally placed directly under the roof gutters or high on the walls angling down to provide light all the way to the ground.

Of course, if you prefer, you can also place outdoor lighting fixtures on the ground.  In this case, the illumination would be set to focus on a particular area, perhaps a dark corner or walkway, or a number of different areas.  The
great thing about using outdoor security lighting on ground level is that it can be easily hidden.  Usually, lighting is placed near a bush or tree, or even behind a lawn ornament.  With so many different styles and designs, you will simply need to look at all the options and then choosing according to need.

One consideration is that outdoor security lighting installed on the ground is typically not as bright as lights placed high.  If you decide to go with the higher installation placement, you may find that you have to adjust the angle several times to find the one that will work best.  The installation of outdoor security lighting is simple, only requiring a light switch inside the home.  However, if you want the lighting system to turn on automatically, you could go with motion sensors or have the lights put on a timer.
